<br />
Each year, <a href="http://salonforever.se/">Salon</a> holds a conference where decorative artists gather from all corners of the earth to paint , share techniques and present a panel of their work. The gatherings are held in various countries with this year being NYC!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The event was hosted by Arlene Mcloughlin and Jeanne S. Schnupp.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
Some people paint to make money, but the true artist paints because they are driven to, never factoring in how profitable a piece might be.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zidrI4dMclk/VwEg_mlqnrI/AAAAAAAAGng/JPHGKECdHnkv1-iVJBegQMDzsuWEL3BxA/s1600/3ed2e525-bcf9-46e0-bcc6-0ce576ad9159.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zidrI4dMclk/VwEg_mlqnrI/AAAAAAAAGng/JPHGKECdHnkv1-iVJBegQMDzsuWEL3BxA/s400/3ed2e525-bcf9-46e0-bcc6-0ce576ad9159.jpg" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
Walking into David Masterson's studio is proof of his obsession with painting! No surface is left untouched. Every wall and available ceiling space is covered and stacked with painted works.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pqeNTtAvvNk/VwEdBhVT7mI/AAAAAAAAGmk/TJjBgbfIAnA5wX6vF0xEu-C4dc-b1EnRA/s1600/cc895ff6-09a7-4111-bcae-652425fc722b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pqeNTtAvvNk/VwEdBhVT7mI/AAAAAAAAGmk/TJjBgbfIAnA5wX6vF0xEu-C4dc-b1EnRA/s640/cc895ff6-09a7-4111-bcae-652425fc722b.jpg" width="504" /></a></div>
<br />
Not only does David paint on canvas, he sculpts wood and works with ceramics as well as directing and<a href="http://trophyquest.com/index.html"> producing film.</a> David Masterson is a true creator! You can follow David on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/david.masterson.3958?fref=ts">facebook</a>- he is in the studio daily painting .<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WNnbiVpZ-j4/VwEcEzS4P0I/AAAAAAAAGmU/xnFQBJQt0KMoT44a4Fk1KtYmEErATTmqw/s1600/72f0ff6e-a07a-46ab-84bf-cc6b99528aae.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WNnbiVpZ-j4/VwEcEzS4P0I/AAAAAAAAGmU/xnFQBJQt0KMoT44a4Fk1KtYmEErATTmqw/s400/72f0ff6e-a07a-46ab-84bf-cc6b99528aae.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I found him while I was working out of town for a month. His son worked in a paint store I was in and after we chatted, he said I ought to meet his Dad. Walking in the studio, I saw influences of Picasso, Ben Shawn, Matisse and aboriginal art.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FNGX0fzHoeU/VwEfAcmedwI/AAAAAAAAGnM/_8tZtCJzfdg8iFCZhAnDkk1wxFotfYrFQ/s1600/77c47a20-7c6c-49cf-b962-23dd744dfd4e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FNGX0fzHoeU/VwEfAcmedwI/AAAAAAAAGnM/_8tZtCJzfdg8iFCZhAnDkk1wxFotfYrFQ/s400/77c47a20-7c6c-49cf-b962-23dd744dfd4e.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Most of his work is large and on canvas or board.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-81uDkos_PzQ/VwEj6UOy_eI/AAAAAAAAGn0/UB666V-cDw8d48rw9lh8tzv_6MU50W6bw/s1600/2d49eec1-1ccc-485e-ae9d-57b9d4db2e7b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-81uDkos_PzQ/VwEj6UOy_eI/AAAAAAAAGn0/UB666V-cDw8d48rw9lh8tzv_6MU50W6bw/s640/2d49eec1-1ccc-485e-ae9d-57b9d4db2e7b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The closer you look, you see layers of texture , collage and frenetic brush strokes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ac7Ok_5J3nU/VwEge1bZsWI/AAAAAAAAGnc/tx79SlnCKSwD8YCDF6zst0ZoFIEO-ppMw/s1600/4883f9bb-bd22-4519-9c06-76b86affc391.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ac7Ok_5J3nU/VwEge1bZsWI/AAAAAAAAGnc/tx79SlnCKSwD8YCDF6zst0ZoFIEO-ppMw/s400/4883f9bb-bd22-4519-9c06-76b86affc391.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
His works on paper might be smaller in size but offer the same amount of energy!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uYSfBsJX46U/VwEcdukk5RI/AAAAAAAAGmc/ngBa0AYfWAghJLAfo6nYODQ6eCnnWotDg/s1600/bb00cf69-c695-47c0-a69c-7a7650c495aa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uYSfBsJX46U/VwEcdukk5RI/AAAAAAAAGmc/ngBa0AYfWAghJLAfo6nYODQ6eCnnWotDg/s400/bb00cf69-c695-47c0-a69c-7a7650c495aa.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Many works reflect his travels to Europe and other parts of the world.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uAk54FtsFzA/VwEfWjeoHTI/AAAAAAAAGnM/4uILfwfRmaAj1oz2ZTaVYRlnJKcGisJ3A/s1600/d97967b9-495a-4198-9452-dd6ebf3a20fd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uAk54FtsFzA/VwEfWjeoHTI/AAAAAAAAGnM/4uILfwfRmaAj1oz2ZTaVYRlnJKcGisJ3A/s400/d97967b9-495a-4198-9452-dd6ebf3a20fd.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Did you ever just "click" with someone the minute you met them? I had that happen on a job recently. I was bidding on a simple gilding of a crucifix for a Catholic church and one thing led to another,....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Fe5fe59mnUc/VtEewKhwbAI/AAAAAAAAGkE/QLI_BP-uqCQ/s1600/1144af9c-e606-4289-b130-fff9681c544e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="277" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Fe5fe59mnUc/VtEewKhwbAI/AAAAAAAAGkE/QLI_BP-uqCQ/s400/1144af9c-e606-4289-b130-fff9681c544e.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The priest wanted to break up all of the stained wood and bring in some embellishments.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W-cNBcxLUxw/Vs_bAy_y-dI/AAAAAAAAGjk/faC22JIKB04/s1600/d0b156ed-90b2-49fd-b100-1f9da14528bc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W-cNBcxLUxw/Vs_bAy_y-dI/AAAAAAAAGjk/faC22JIKB04/s400/d0b156ed-90b2-49fd-b100-1f9da14528bc.jpg" width="297" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My inspiration came from a frame in the Metropolitan museum in NYC- I took this picture a few years before and thought the motif would be perfect for this job.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pP1CY6Dr6PE/Vs-nzcVuh_I/AAAAAAAAGi0/0IwA16WkcK8/s1600/65c5d1ac-9e8b-4b40-ba9b-8ec587257a6c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pP1CY6Dr6PE/Vs-nzcVuh_I/AAAAAAAAGi0/0IwA16WkcK8/s400/65c5d1ac-9e8b-4b40-ba9b-8ec587257a6c.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I scaled the design to fit the chevrons over the statuary and hand painted the motif using Modern Masters Pharaoh Gold and gold leaf.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A few days into the job, the ritual of espresso began...(perks of the job when the priest previously lived in Rome.)</div>

It didn't hurt that my <a href="http://ninashometextiles.mysupadupa.com/">new bag</a> from Rome arrived the same week! I hope my art samples can live up to such a beautiful bag! What an inspirational week! </div>

While digging through a stack of linens at an estate sale, recently I saw a mooring post peering back at me...<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kfFGl6GTIGA/VhpsgZv3Q_I/AAAAAAAAGdI/Qhon7SlTQJE/s1600/unnamed-14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kfFGl6GTIGA/VhpsgZv3Q_I/AAAAAAAAGdI/Qhon7SlTQJE/s320/unnamed-14.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
My heart skipped a beat as I dug further....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qKwKARXGfPI/VhpsnbNLsJI/AAAAAAAAGdc/OT9WURtkL5M/s1600/unnamed-29.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qKwKARXGfPI/VhpsnbNLsJI/AAAAAAAAGdc/OT9WURtkL5M/s320/unnamed-29.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Placemats, napkins and a runner! All different Venetian motifs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ek4pjrgRG8c/Vhps3BOwpNI/AAAAAAAAGdw/WLK4ffU7xmQ/s1600/unnamed-16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ek4pjrgRG8c/Vhps3BOwpNI/AAAAAAAAGdw/WLK4ffU7xmQ/s320/unnamed-16.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The stitchery was exquisite. Motifs include the San Marco horses, mooring posts, ships, wells, and of course gondolas! They were in pristine condition, never used with the "Made in Italy" tags still on each piece.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G-4WUhRdN50/Vhps21hA3FI/AAAAAAAAGd0/aXZH1BjvYI0/s1600/unnamed-15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G-4WUhRdN50/Vhps21hA3FI/AAAAAAAAGd0/aXZH1BjvYI0/s320/unnamed-15.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is what every collector dreams of...finding that elusive needle in a haystack of "stuff". In all the years I have traveled to Italy, I have never seen anything like these! Google tells me it is 5,410 miles from my house to Venice, Italy, I found these linens ten miles from my house...who knew? </div>
<br />

A few years ago, I met Isabella Campagnol who was with Rubelli in Venice at the time. Being from Venice, Isabella has always looked at the historical side of its past. She has recently written two books that Venetian lovers will truly enjoy!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J-6xnHraytU/VTRUEQYsVzI/AAAAAAAAGUg/t88kFhliCHU/s1600/2Q%3D%3D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J-6xnHraytU/VTRUEQYsVzI/AAAAAAAAGUg/t88kFhliCHU/s1600/2Q%3D%3D.jpg" height="400" width="297" /></a></div>
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Forbidden-Fashions-Invisible-Luxuries-Venetian/dp/0896728293">Forbidden Fashions </a>is available through Amazon (and Kindle)and explores the decadent and controversial outfits worn by nuns in the early Venetian convents. Fur, silk, make-up and elaborate hair were the norm as many of these women were locked in convents for monetary reasons by their families.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8KGU-amQ-H0/VTRVn_Sb2TI/AAAAAAAAGUs/1xHYvhJCouQ/s1600/Z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8KGU-amQ-H0/VTRVn_Sb2TI/AAAAAAAAGUs/1xHYvhJCouQ/s1600/Z.jpg" height="320" width="233" /></a></div>
<br />
If you want to find the best kept secrets in Venice from a woman's perspective, this book is a must! <a href="http://www.amazon.it/pretty-Venice-venezia-delle-veneziane/dp/8864422315">My Pretty Venice </a> is available at this time through amazon,it and will be on amazon.com in October.<br />
Shopping, interesting secrets that only locals know about and so many other things are included to make a woman's trip to Venice special. Shop like the locals with this book and come home with a truly authentic Venetian experience.<br />
<br />
I want to thank Isabella for letting me know about her books and will be purchasing them soon! If you have travels in your plans, be sure and pick up these books before you go! Ciao!!</div>

Beth Scanlon of <a href="http://www.scanlonapparati.com/">Scanlon Apparati</a> is my newest obsession!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tU9M3nTAENM/VPENXYHnMJI/AAAAAAAAGOk/AtLDe2jiX60/s1600/1069969_145301918998989_2028012881_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tU9M3nTAENM/VPENXYHnMJI/AAAAAAAAGOk/AtLDe2jiX60/s1600/1069969_145301918998989_2028012881_n.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Her combinations of intricate marbled papers with old maps and drawings can't be matched! Look at the detail of this wastebasket...the front side is actually recessed so the wooden tassels and awning could be added. This is part of the <a href="http://www.scanlonapparati.com/collections/tiepolo-pink">Tiepolo Pink</a> collection. (My favorite!)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This photo shows many products from a <a href="http://quintessenceblog.com/making-rounds-la-cienega-legends-2014/?utm_source=Summer+Dreaming+Mid+May+2014&utm_campaign=Mid+May+2014&utm_medium=email">design show</a> in California last year. Scanlon makes letter holders, wastebaskets, tissue boxes and other ephemera.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1dHBU-g4JfI/VPEOBmcPGrI/AAAAAAAAGO0/0JPkEyI5AzA/s1600/IMG_6665.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1dHBU-g4JfI/VPEOBmcPGrI/AAAAAAAAGO0/0JPkEyI5AzA/s1600/IMG_6665.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I saved the best for last. I don't know if I could bear to put trash in this, but I want it! Italian papers and intricate old maps make my heart skip a beat!...ok. one more photo to make your heart beat a little faster...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C8ns3lYeAuI/VPER5OVHJaI/AAAAAAAAGPA/QIGcQm-8QYo/s1600/DSC_313_large.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C8ns3lYeAuI/VPER5OVHJaI/AAAAAAAAGPA/QIGcQm-8QYo/s1600/DSC_313_large.png" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To quote from the website- "Admiring Tiepolo and the beautiful tent behind the figure of Asia traveling to Europe on the Wurzburg fresco, it occurred to me the Magi must have traveled with tents. So, my cartonnage tent originated as a Christmas piece. Charmed and not wanting to put it away, I turned to tent follies which also represented different continents and historical eras. I chose the Haga Park style because its designer, Luis Jean Deprez, was a French painter and architect who traveled frequently to Italy and I am an American artist who works with Italian paper. I imagine that Deprez may have admired Tiepolo's work too"."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I hope you have enjoyed these images as much as I do!</div>

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tazvnVvZHlc/VNURldFnVvI/AAAAAAAAGMo/09lip471flA/s1600/unnamed-29.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tazvnVvZHlc/VNURldFnVvI/AAAAAAAAGMo/09lip471flA/s1600/unnamed-29.jpg" height="216" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Last year, I spent some time in Ft. Worth, Texas on business. I had to pass by this building almost every day and it really intrigued me! I had no time to stop and investigate and could only get this poor photo through the car window when the light turned red. I would circle the block several times just to get this sad little photo!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--WxyzWA3A-A/VNUR-Ku69RI/AAAAAAAAGMw/CR7pdbyw55I/s1600/IMG_2652.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--WxyzWA3A-A/VNUR-Ku69RI/AAAAAAAAGMw/CR7pdbyw55I/s1600/IMG_2652.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I have been back a few times since and never had time to investigate further until yesterday!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yDZB9pIupg0/VNUSWB7YJuI/AAAAAAAAGM4/-GySfRTh3AA/s1600/IMG_2656.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yDZB9pIupg0/VNUSWB7YJuI/AAAAAAAAGM4/-GySfRTh3AA/s1600/IMG_2656.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The old iron shop is locked tight and appears to be abandoned. I looked in the windows and saw nirvana! I would love to know more about it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TGN3QBDIXn8/VNUSqBHQhlI/AAAAAAAAGNA/jpEBYjbEAvo/s1600/IMG_2654.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TGN3QBDIXn8/VNUSqBHQhlI/AAAAAAAAGNA/jpEBYjbEAvo/s1600/IMG_2654.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
All I could find is that it is family owned. I am not sure if it is open at all or now out of business.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZCbO87mdJbE/VNUS5ZqrufI/AAAAAAAAGNI/A6OwmJzwC5w/s1600/IMG_2653.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZCbO87mdJbE/VNUS5ZqrufI/AAAAAAAAGNI/A6OwmJzwC5w/s1600/IMG_2653.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The work is obviously done by someone with passion for their trade.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gOXRfITI3_I/VNUS7VWqMdI/AAAAAAAAGNQ/Q6lXGxDQVcI/s1600/IMG_2655.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gOXRfITI3_I/VNUS7VWqMdI/AAAAAAAAGNQ/Q6lXGxDQVcI/s1600/IMG_2655.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
If anyone knows about Dunnagan Iron Works in Ft.Worth, let me know. I will be first in line for the salvage sale!</div>

This collection of small marbled vases caught my eye. They are done in a naive style where the paint is simply swirled to make the design. Technical patterns are not able to be achieved with this method but, it still produces an interesting design.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-K7lWboZPj9c/VD6-YOWAtzI/AAAAAAAAGCw/1SURwPCHcho/s1600/IMG_2360.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-K7lWboZPj9c/VD6-YOWAtzI/AAAAAAAAGCw/1SURwPCHcho/s1600/IMG_2360.jpg" height="400" width="241" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I love clutter. I thrive in chaotic creativity! But, even I have to draw the line sometimes. My refrigerator had become an explosion of photos, memorabilia and too much stuff.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JedjRwAEmAM/VD6-fE5vt4I/AAAAAAAAGC4/kp3aSmDx_OA/s1600/IMG_2361.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JedjRwAEmAM/VD6-fE5vt4I/AAAAAAAAGC4/kp3aSmDx_OA/s1600/IMG_2361.jpg" height="400" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Is this the same refrigerator? You probably see order and nice, clean lines. I see a blank canvas...something my brain is always wrestling with. How far do you take a blank surface in your home?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gWa-_7CqrkY/VD6-nV0olDI/AAAAAAAAGDA/-oyqr9iGdbE/s1600/IMG_2362.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gWa-_7CqrkY/VD6-nV0olDI/AAAAAAAAGDA/-oyqr9iGdbE/s1600/IMG_2362.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had an idea in the back of my mind for about a year now on how to turn my refrigerator from kindergarten art to an elegant piece of furniture. I began by gilding pieces of trim.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-49pr0mWbSaE/VD7AFmRPQlI/AAAAAAAAGDU/je8BBC50fkk/s1600/unnamed-21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-49pr0mWbSaE/VD7AFmRPQlI/AAAAAAAAGDU/je8BBC50fkk/s1600/unnamed-21.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
I purchased old hardware on ebay and the hardware store. I wanted something between a <a href="http://www.lacornueusa.com/product/culinary-architecture/">La Cornue</a> range and a Flemish painting....First, I put my refrigerator into a little black dress.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-F7T89PWCFRI/VD7AqkCQWcI/AAAAAAAAGD0/y8itgGgnSRk/s1600/unnamed-21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-F7T89PWCFRI/VD7AqkCQWcI/AAAAAAAAGD0/y8itgGgnSRk/s1600/unnamed-21.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
I used items I had to give it a european feel.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gnoyMPhxh4c/VD7AsiONlBI/AAAAAAAAGD8/g3F9rCqBWbw/s1600/unnamed-22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gnoyMPhxh4c/VD7AsiONlBI/AAAAAAAAGD8/g3F9rCqBWbw/s1600/unnamed-22.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I lined the edges of the doors with the gilded trim and finished out the corners with brass plates and acorn nuts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7HWp_bhDHtI/VD7C7Ks5tnI/AAAAAAAAGEI/7uJ4TFKnjHE/s1600/unnamed-20.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7HWp_bhDHtI/VD7C7Ks5tnI/AAAAAAAAGEI/7uJ4TFKnjHE/s1600/unnamed-20.jpg" height="320" width="195" /></a></div>
I love the industrial look it gave.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h3y0sWpNN0s/VD7AncBzIjI/AAAAAAAAGDs/1zLXufoinNU/s1600/unnamed-24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h3y0sWpNN0s/VD7AncBzIjI/AAAAAAAAGDs/1zLXufoinNU/s1600/unnamed-24.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Is this the same fridge? It shows what a quart of paint, some trim and imagination (and restraint) can accomplish!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UV5PrkoDE9A/VD7EJkMmDyI/AAAAAAAAGEg/50hKLDL0XYI/s1600/unnamed-25.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UV5PrkoDE9A/VD7EJkMmDyI/AAAAAAAAGEg/50hKLDL0XYI/s1600/unnamed-25.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
The items hanging are things picked up in Paris and other travels...they can be appreciated now, not lost in the clutter.<br />

I really cringed about showing you the before photos, but thought this might help others in how to accomplish a relatively simple facelift!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r9XKVDnnM-Q/VB36D8sHt7I/AAAAAAAAGAM/BijLG5zOe9I/s1600/unnamed.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r9XKVDnnM-Q/VB36D8sHt7I/AAAAAAAAGAM/BijLG5zOe9I/s1600/unnamed.png" height="400" width="286" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Have you ever been asked to replicate wallpaper? Maybe it is out of print now, or other reasons for a client to want this done. I just finished a job where wallpaper was the inspiration for a powder room.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lkpHmrPMNP4/VB4QEWFQaxI/AAAAAAAAGAg/hWzY8ijQY64/s1600/unnamed-20.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lkpHmrPMNP4/VB4QEWFQaxI/AAAAAAAAGAg/hWzY8ijQY64/s1600/unnamed-20.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I started by chalking in some of the design -using two stencils -to give the client an idea of the process. Chalk is a wonderful tool to express ideas directly on the wall, just wipe off the mistakes, paint directly over the guides and keep going!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y84U5DCf1pw/VB4Qj1RklQI/AAAAAAAAGAo/EodXKSp1XYs/s1600/unnamed-14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y84U5DCf1pw/VB4Qj1RklQI/AAAAAAAAGAo/EodXKSp1XYs/s1600/unnamed-14.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I began the stenciling -after doing the math- so on each wall the design would stop at the corners. I started with the stencil "as is", but knew I would need to alter it to make the gold design come out right.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Aw3UnStujQo/VB4RL6PlcuI/AAAAAAAAGAw/MQvq4IDCQxc/s1600/unnamed-16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Aw3UnStujQo/VB4RL6PlcuI/AAAAAAAAGAw/MQvq4IDCQxc/s1600/unnamed-16.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here comes the chalk again. I began to add ornament to the stenciled shape, making it wider and longer.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Be5G4E9xagA/VB4ReHdaGPI/AAAAAAAAGA4/jUPX9kujnsU/s1600/unnamed-18.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Be5G4E9xagA/VB4ReHdaGPI/AAAAAAAAGA4/jUPX9kujnsU/s1600/unnamed-18.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<div>
Here is the finished design, closely resembling the wallpaper graphics.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hGSrwb6L23A/VB4RzAFvScI/AAAAAAAAGBA/C7K60Vdl3A4/s1600/unnamed-19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hGSrwb6L23A/VB4RzAFvScI/AAAAAAAAGBA/C7K60Vdl3A4/s1600/unnamed-19.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now, time to add the gold! This is what makes the design so wonderful. If you have a sharp eye, you realize I have done all of this in reverse. The wallpaper was gold background with blue silkscreen design-which is what drove their cost up! By reversing the process, I used less gold to keep cost down but had issues to solve where the design met the background.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j7M8R0iGNSM/VB4SdK2xfbI/AAAAAAAAGBM/BZoM6Ffcprs/s1600/unnamed-21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j7M8R0iGNSM/VB4SdK2xfbI/AAAAAAAAGBM/BZoM6Ffcprs/s1600/unnamed-21.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here are the finished walls. I had to trowel blue paint over gold and gold paint over blue around the edges of the stencil to make the color crossover work. I also did some negative stenciling over the gold in blue to add to the design. The client is very happy and I enjoyed the whole process. Always think outside the box with stenciling, they are usually just the beginning of a creative process.</div>

Last week, I went to Seattle for<a href="http://salonseattle2014.com/"> Salon-</a>an international gathering of decorative artists from around the world. I stayed in a charming B & B- the <a href="http://pensionenichols.com/">Pensione Nichols</a> with <a href="http://www.stencil-library.com/index.html">Helen Morris</a> , the fabulous owner of the <a href="http://www.stencil-library.com/index.html">Stencil Library</a> and <a href="http://www.designinspiration.typepad.com/">her blog</a> -from the United Kingdom.<br />
<br />

Staying in a pensione allows a more intimate travel experience. We were greeted each morning by Theo the dog and the owner, Lindsey. Guests meet in a common area for breakfast , best view of the waterfront , good music and chatting.<br />

<a href="http://loredanorizzotti.com/biography/">(source)</a></div>
This is where we met artists Loredano Rizzotti and Maureen Hoffmann. Loredano was having a show at a nearby gallery and Helen and I were invited to the opening!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://christiangrevstad.com/about-2/">(source)</a></div>
The <a href="http://christiangrevstad.com/current-exhibits-2/">Christian Grevstad gallery</a> was hosting a wonderful representation of Rizzotti's overscaled work. Helen and I walked in and swooned!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-76BDtcc8k3w/U2140-0ml1I/AAAAAAAAFxw/mOOG-PILZWY/s1600/LRizzotti-Portrait-with-SandalsCR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-76BDtcc8k3w/U2140-0ml1I/AAAAAAAAFxw/mOOG-PILZWY/s1600/LRizzotti-Portrait-with-SandalsCR.jpg" height="355" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://loredanorizzotti.com/biography/">(source)</a></div>
Rizzotti's father was a mosaic artist and Loredano began his career as a lithographer.."s<a href="http://loredanorizzotti.com/biography/">omething which yielded a precise and technical training.."</a> This exhibition consisted of larger than life images of shoes, purses, books and more from his series-The Gated Doors, The Books, The Journey and The Musical Instruments.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cjt5-jfQWJM/U215-yAw95I/AAAAAAAAFyI/5dqsGKCcNEA/s1600/IMG_2415.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cjt5-jfQWJM/U215-yAw95I/AAAAAAAAFyI/5dqsGKCcNEA/s1600/IMG_2415.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The detail was incredible!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7nduhqYkQ6A/U215-3z9dvI/AAAAAAAAFyM/9lb5rLcta8Y/s1600/IMG_2417.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7nduhqYkQ6A/U215-3z9dvI/AAAAAAAAFyM/9lb5rLcta8Y/s1600/IMG_2417.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
To me, it was a combination of fine art, decorative art techniques and trompe l'oeil. I was in heaven!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HWDq00JQLPE/U2156tl9NsI/AAAAAAAAFx8/twQNORTq25s/s1600/IMG_2413.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HWDq00JQLPE/U2156tl9NsI/AAAAAAAAFx8/twQNORTq25s/s1600/IMG_2413.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Maureen posed with the beaded bag used in this painting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lUBEXnX_Fn8/U216iYTlKlI/AAAAAAAAFyk/MyFdt3-tRmg/s1600/IMG_2419.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lUBEXnX_Fn8/U216iYTlKlI/AAAAAAAAFyk/MyFdt3-tRmg/s1600/IMG_2419.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Nothing was left to imagination, every bead painted with a glassy reflection...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KBwSFWjOrv4/U216hSL9rlI/AAAAAAAAFyc/icBKIhU6dNE/s1600/IMG_2420.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KBwSFWjOrv4/U216hSL9rlI/AAAAAAAAFyc/icBKIhU6dNE/s1600/IMG_2420.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
...and the strings exposed showing the sewing of the rows of beads.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FWV25CnvlzQ/U217XbapnsI/AAAAAAAAFy4/xk_dOX-BFHY/s1600/IMG_2426.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FWV25CnvlzQ/U217XbapnsI/AAAAAAAAFy4/xk_dOX-BFHY/s1600/IMG_2426.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Then there were the books! Painted , time worn books stacked haphazardly showing their worn edges and leather spines.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ycm3XM1-sNk/U216hcpk01I/AAAAAAAAFyY/p-ytINewPyI/s1600/IMG_2421.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ycm3XM1-sNk/U216hcpk01I/AAAAAAAAFyY/p-ytINewPyI/s1600/IMG_2421.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
One of the largest pieces was this incredible painting of broken musical instruments...Loredano says...<a href="http://loredanorizzotti.com/biography/">"destroyed, dusty, now unusable. As if to say that the music is over...that there is no more music in our world...that it is time to be silent"</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LlDA2KtDUOM/U22RLKCXxAI/AAAAAAAAFzk/ln3tVFofjJA/s1600/IMG_2429.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LlDA2KtDUOM/U22RLKCXxAI/AAAAAAAAFzk/ln3tVFofjJA/s1600/IMG_2429.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Thank you Maureen Hoffmann for talking to me about Loredano's work. What a pleasant surprise it was to meet you both.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zJgGXIlrrcU/U22Q35i4JtI/AAAAAAAAFzg/Ft4LmL-W6Co/s1600/IMG_2345.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zJgGXIlrrcU/U22Q35i4JtI/AAAAAAAAFzg/Ft4LmL-W6Co/s1600/IMG_2345.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a>...and the view from the balcony was not bad either!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Can you hear the knocking? This is an <i>incredible </i>opportunity! Rome! Pierre and Carolina! Students will study marbles, stone and trompe l'oeil with Pierre and grottesca done with egg tempera with Carolina.<br />

<br />
A friend invited me to High Tea at a nearby old <a href="http://www.roselandplantation.com/">plantation home</a> today.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KUsvNzqnFPQ/UzIXC3PNXjI/AAAAAAAAFsQ/CzaZKv0Ip_M/s1600/IMG_2222.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KUsvNzqnFPQ/UzIXC3PNXjI/AAAAAAAAFsQ/CzaZKv0Ip_M/s1600/IMG_2222.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
Promptly at 2:00, sixteen women were seated to a lovely menu of fruit, scones, tea sandwiches and desserts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3MI4DHD0xG8/UzIXuiaS__I/AAAAAAAAFsg/DCBrzDeCjXM/s1600/IMG_2221.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3MI4DHD0xG8/UzIXuiaS__I/AAAAAAAAFsg/DCBrzDeCjXM/s1600/IMG_2221.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
On the left of me were two women from Louisiana(friends since college) and a woman originally from New Jersey celebrating her birthday. These teas book early and are only offered three times a year. Look at those unusual tea spoon rests, aren't they fabulous!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9bz9ilBTnns/UzIYdIQSeQI/AAAAAAAAFso/nKcrXnYYpAw/s1600/IMG_2226.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9bz9ilBTnns/UzIYdIQSeQI/AAAAAAAAFso/nKcrXnYYpAw/s1600/IMG_2226.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
The owners of the plantation live in this home and keep it spotless for tours and teas. The grounds include a log cabin, chapel and other buildings.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LCgiez5KVNk/UzIZKp-YWdI/AAAAAAAAFsw/YXKeKEnZqHg/s1600/IMG_2232.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LCgiez5KVNk/UzIZKp-YWdI/AAAAAAAAFsw/YXKeKEnZqHg/s1600/IMG_2232.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
I kept wandering off from the group, shooting pictures of the original bricks made on the plantation in the 1800's....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vQplUJE5hUE/UzIZp1QKUfI/AAAAAAAAFs4/RMb-wjPfnME/s1600/IMG_2233.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vQplUJE5hUE/UzIZp1QKUfI/AAAAAAAAFs4/RMb-wjPfnME/s1600/IMG_2233.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
...and the old cast iron vents for the pier and beam structure. I have been to this home over the years for parties and other events, but never a tea.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UE7uDPRSvas/UzIaTHVWLwI/AAAAAAAAFtA/7pL_ub-5uv4/s1600/IMG_2239.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UE7uDPRSvas/UzIaTHVWLwI/AAAAAAAAFtA/7pL_ub-5uv4/s1600/IMG_2239.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
One treat on the tour is a 15 feet by 28 feet life size copy of the Last Supper..who knew?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Nb3KG4JZ4V4/UzIa0NBbnfI/AAAAAAAAFtI/U66vFjKPCD0/s1600/IMG_2245.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Nb3KG4JZ4V4/UzIa0NBbnfI/AAAAAAAAFtI/U66vFjKPCD0/s1600/IMG_2245.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
An earlier home owner had traveled to Milan and was so taken with the original, they hired artists from Greece to come to Texas and produce this oil copy on canvas.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-24dTHw3SNOY/UzIbVyPg2BI/AAAAAAAAFtQ/3BbKVdRqgc0/s1600/IMG_2244.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-24dTHw3SNOY/UzIbVyPg2BI/AAAAAAAAFtQ/3BbKVdRqgc0/s1600/IMG_2244.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eVd2dpTfCaE/UwoFSKKDLfI/AAAAAAAAFpQ/vy_ANejTg5o/s1600/07_santa_maria_fiore.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eVd2dpTfCaE/UwoFSKKDLfI/AAAAAAAAFpQ/vy_ANejTg5o/s1600/07_santa_maria_fiore.jpg" height="400" width="393" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://web.tiscali.it/melloarte/index.html">Gianfranco </a>understands Firenze light. He has captured it successfully for years from his home terrace in Florence, Italy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_UNChB7_2xI/UwoFZrlmNNI/AAAAAAAAFpY/vB13W28YKhg/s1600/13_aranci_cipressi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_UNChB7_2xI/UwoFZrlmNNI/AAAAAAAAFpY/vB13W28YKhg/s1600/13_aranci_cipressi.jpg" height="372" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Walking into his studio on Borgo Pinti, you are transported into his world...paintings hang on every available space and lean on the walls, vintage woven wool rugs cover the floors and just enough period furniture made me think of Gertrude Stein's atelier. It was no surprise that opera music flowed through the high vaulted ceilings.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H5PpKFBkn7M/UwoGzEOW-2I/AAAAAAAAFpk/SDdGDr586l4/s1600/06_luce_smaria_fiore.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H5PpKFBkn7M/UwoGzEOW-2I/AAAAAAAAFpk/SDdGDr586l4/s1600/06_luce_smaria_fiore.jpg" height="397" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
He never tires of capturing the light on the Duomo which is easily painted from his terrace. If these <a href="http://web.tiscali.it/melloarte/index.html">images</a> seem blurry, it is due to the fact he works with a mixed technique on canvas. To see one in person is a privilege. The layers are grainy and textural against the canvas. His colors are vibrant and he understands encaustic and paint in a way I never knew was possible.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WloEAaoGwYk/UwoJdHt8uZI/AAAAAAAAFpw/4K6DwTvf8ZY/s1600/unnamed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WloEAaoGwYk/UwoJdHt8uZI/AAAAAAAAFpw/4K6DwTvf8ZY/s1600/unnamed.jpg" height="400" width="340" /></a></div>
<br />
I first visited his studio three years ago but did not meet the artist until this trip. I took<a href="http://www.ornamentalist.net/"> Lynne Rutter</a> to see his work and we were both surprised to be there when he was in the studio. It is moments such as this that draw me back again and again to wander the streets of Florence and discover another layer it has to offer.</div>

Creams, lotions, soaps and perfumes are viewed through glass cases. I choose to see the soaps. A wooden tray is brought out with all scents represented. You may touch the samples and smell the scents.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qr-F5sa288I/UtFv3CnB6ZI/AAAAAAAAFjU/FKQTqloYxFI/s1600/IMG_1662.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qr-F5sa288I/UtFv3CnB6ZI/AAAAAAAAFjU/FKQTqloYxFI/s1600/IMG_1662.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I think you all know by now that I have a penchant for all things <i>Chinoiserie</i>.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I recently was asked to embellish a small powder room done in <a href="http://www.graciestudio.com/">Gracie paper</a>. The trim and door were white and competed with the scene.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k9ld6FffeZw/UtFsF6zNP6I/AAAAAAAAFjA/6WtC-3F0N4w/s1600/unnamed-18.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k9ld6FffeZw/UtFsF6zNP6I/AAAAAAAAFjA/6WtC-3F0N4w/s1600/unnamed-18.jpg" height="640" width="475" /></a></div>
I based coated everything in a high green. Gracie wallpaper is very complex with layers of subtle washes of color for their backgrounds. I used three to four washes to make the design seamless.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WoNQQgC3VY8/UtFtC9fwl9I/AAAAAAAAFjI/TVonCSVCoYo/s1600/unnamed-19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WoNQQgC3VY8/UtFtC9fwl9I/AAAAAAAAFjI/TVonCSVCoYo/s1600/unnamed-19.jpg" height="640" width="476" /></a></div>
<br />
Details were extended into the moulding to complete the scene...now, on to the door!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PXrGu7y1ZnU/UtFwTxOFMMI/AAAAAAAAFjc/xDZ2Uqm8ge4/s1600/IMG_1658.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PXrGu7y1ZnU/UtFwTxOFMMI/AAAAAAAAFjc/xDZ2Uqm8ge4/s1600/IMG_1658.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I based the door and then began the layers of washes....all straight acrylic paint thinned with water and wiped back. No glaze.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YFbp6G0PR-c/UtFw1sAcBwI/AAAAAAAAFjk/6WatWVLIsbM/s1600/IMG_1718.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YFbp6G0PR-c/UtFw1sAcBwI/AAAAAAAAFjk/6WatWVLIsbM/s1600/IMG_1718.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The layers gave a soft patina of age and depth. Accents of corals were added to the edges and bevels...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DrfpDwWTCFQ/UtFxfNGOPzI/AAAAAAAAFjs/woXU2B8TUUs/s1600/IMG_1720.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DrfpDwWTCFQ/UtFxfNGOPzI/AAAAAAAAFjs/woXU2B8TUUs/s1600/IMG_1720.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
A main element of ornament was added to the top panel with small accents in the lower panels...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
A bird cage of bamboo was added with songbird and foliage...colors were a traditional palette..cadmium yellow, burnt sienna, raw sienna, burnt umber, alizarin crimson and bone black<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zVqpvF3QdYk/UtF1lR0AWYI/AAAAAAAAFkE/cb2k0d9EfwA/s1600/unnamed-12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zVqpvF3QdYk/UtF1lR0AWYI/AAAAAAAAFkE/cb2k0d9EfwA/s1600/unnamed-12.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
The client designed the birdcage with thatched roof and bamboo design.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This is a teeny room under the staircase and hard to shoot an interior shot with a camera!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r3hJ2ABgoDY/UtF4kNmrcwI/AAAAAAAAFkw/VLYezMEuG8o/s1600/unnamed-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r3hJ2ABgoDY/UtF4kNmrcwI/AAAAAAAAFkw/VLYezMEuG8o/s1600/unnamed-4.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
It's always about the details...there are no shortcuts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I can't wait to see the room with the sconces and mirror hung! It was a lovely project to be involved in.<br />

<br />
<br />
Did you ever feel like a square peg in a round hole? Most artists do growing up.<br />
<br />
Attending college at the University of Texas was an eye opener for me! There, I found my niche.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-me6KQ-RQsi8/Uma5q65Wf6I/AAAAAAAAFag/03bQGkqorcs/s1600/Eeyore's_Birthday_Party_2010_The_Birthday_Banner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-me6KQ-RQsi8/Uma5q65Wf6I/AAAAAAAAFag/03bQGkqorcs/s400/Eeyore's_Birthday_Party_2010_The_Birthday_Banner.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Austin, Texas 1976...<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Eeyore%27s_Birthday_Party_2010_The_Birthday_Banner.jpg">.Eeyore's Birthday Party</a>, Zilker Park and a diverse art department...what more could anyone want?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XOUVr1Yswlc/UmbB8M8abQI/AAAAAAAAFas/uOeVi5Xvr9U/s1600/photo-4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XOUVr1Yswlc/UmbB8M8abQI/AAAAAAAAFas/uOeVi5Xvr9U/s640/photo-4.JPG" width="473" /></a></div>
<br />
I was introduced to graphite powder, texture boards, gouache, silverpoint and so much more. I made collages from textures of wood, woven bamboo, even my artist smock was morphed into rock-like formations.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1PTz6qmu-SM/UmbC_m3Fk8I/AAAAAAAAFa0/pwZFr3SzEyQ/s1600/photo-6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1PTz6qmu-SM/UmbC_m3Fk8I/AAAAAAAAFa0/pwZFr3SzEyQ/s640/photo-6.JPG" width="504" /></a></div>

Kelly Fearing showed me a world of alien landscapes made of layers of texture. He had me create countless texture boards from onion bags, screen netting, the end of bamboo paintbrush and other items pressed into texture medium.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vW5WBctxYSg/UmbD_fLBpOI/AAAAAAAAFa8/Qctm0Xuet6c/s1600/photo-1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vW5WBctxYSg/UmbD_fLBpOI/AAAAAAAAFa8/Qctm0Xuet6c/s640/photo-1.JPG" width="478" /></a></div>
I learned old school....no cell phone, computer, pinterest or facebook for inspiration. Paper was placed over the texture boards and rubbed with Pentel "japanese crayons" and graphite sticks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MetK29W_-nU/UmbSbIHgC7I/AAAAAAAAFbM/ujEHXY1B4rg/s1600/274.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MetK29W_-nU/UmbSbIHgC7I/AAAAAAAAFbM/ujEHXY1B4rg/s640/274.jpg" width="488" /></a></div>
<br />
Gibbs Milliken was my life drawing professor for two years. He influenced me with his simple paintings of weeds growing in cracks in the sidewalk and feathers hanging from a string.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is acrylic and gold leaf on linen done by Kelly Fearing in 1968. It is as relevant today as it was in 1968 because he understood the medium and how to manipulate it. I was educated to explore mediums and understand their properties, not to use a "kit"approach and then be frustrated when something goes wrong.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YnJMlNXN5hc/UmbagkqCPHI/AAAAAAAAFbs/dQ4pqFeB8aQ/s1600/arts_feature3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YnJMlNXN5hc/UmbagkqCPHI/AAAAAAAAFbs/dQ4pqFeB8aQ/s1600/arts_feature3.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.austinchronicle.com/arts/2007-12-21/574116/">source</a></div>
Gibbs Milliken carved an ink quill for me from a yucca plant, he had learned the technique from native americans and how the yucca stem is absorbent. I still have it and treasure it. He taught me to loosen up with my drawing and to never let a project become "work".<br />
<br />

Kelly Fearing showed me there is art in everything and gave me his passion for color.<br />
Without these two men, I would not be who I am today. Who's mentoring you?<br />

<br />
I love the San Francisco airport...they often have mini exhibits to view while waiting to board a plane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vs5L7kAzqIQ/Ul81EMKgX1I/AAAAAAAAFY8/5KKAf-EymE0/s1600/photo+(21).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vs5L7kAzqIQ/Ul81EMKgX1I/AAAAAAAAFY8/5KKAf-EymE0/s400/photo+(21).JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Imagine my surprise when I saw this exhibit on sailor knotting ! I had seen one of the finest examples of knotting a few weeks prior to this trip and it had stayed on my mind.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hRmbvBimW-Q/Ul81IIa4h5I/AAAAAAAAFZE/-G8xIbOZKGM/s1600/photo+(22).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hRmbvBimW-Q/Ul81IIa4h5I/AAAAAAAAFZE/-G8xIbOZKGM/s320/photo+(22).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
While on ships, sailors got creative with their spare time and developed the art of macramé into an art form.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ik-O-7L5Dpc/Ul81MauuHaI/AAAAAAAAFZM/YpTA6f8cmxw/s1600/photo+(23).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ik-O-7L5Dpc/Ul81MauuHaI/AAAAAAAAFZM/YpTA6f8cmxw/s320/photo+(23).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
They would tie the knots over wine bottles, boxes and even the ship's wheel!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L7PLQNFHfVg/Ul81RTEXgEI/AAAAAAAAFZU/XAbjncTb4_I/s1600/photo+(24).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L7PLQNFHfVg/Ul81RTEXgEI/AAAAAAAAFZU/XAbjncTb4_I/s320/photo+(24).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Although they had some great examples, none compared with the jug I had seen earlier.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TDlDxH0W44M/Ul803FZteDI/AAAAAAAAFYo/WkC0MRUfJCk/s1600/photo+%252818%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TDlDxH0W44M/Ul803FZteDI/AAAAAAAAFYo/WkC0MRUfJCk/s320/photo+%252818%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
It was in a lamp shop in Little Rock , Arkansas...<a href="http://www.lampshadesandtheaccessory.com/">Lamp Shades Etc.</a> Those teeny knots called to me from across the room.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kTGH6fJiCtI/Ul807bZ89cI/AAAAAAAAFYw/J-DDSpv3PuQ/s1600/photo+%252819%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kTGH6fJiCtI/Ul807bZ89cI/AAAAAAAAFYw/J-DDSpv3PuQ/s400/photo+%252819%2529.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
Have you ever seen a more exquisite example of sailor knotting? Even the lid has a cap! I swooned! The price was a little out of my budget, but I am optimistic about finding another one in my future. Never underestimate a woman on a mission! I'll let you know if I find another treasure...!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
Wikipedia defines camera obscura as-"is an optical device that projects an image of its surroundings on a screen"<span style="background-color: white; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19.1875px;"> </span><br />

<span style="line-height: 19.1875px;">Imagine my surprise when, recently in San Francisco, I found a working camera obscura! </span><br />
<span style="line-height: 19.1875px;"> Leonardo da Vinci describes the camera in his notebooks-"In 1490 Leonardo da Vinci gave two clear descriptions of the camera obscura in his notebooks. Many of the first camera obscuras were large rooms like that illustrated by the Dutch scientist Reinerus Gemma-Frisius in 1544 for use in observing a solar eclipse."</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7pf_7lWteaI/Uknd-hZvQrI/AAAAAAAAFWE/vE8KHFGB4ws/s1600/IMG_0811.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7pf_7lWteaI/Uknd-hZvQrI/AAAAAAAAFWE/vE8KHFGB4ws/s400/IMG_0811.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
The camera was built as a tourist attraction by Floyd Jennings, a San Francisco businessman , on a cliff overlooking Seal Rocks . Life Magazine featured it in their<a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=S0gEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA9&source=gbs_toc_r&cad=1#v=onepage&q&f=false"> March 1964 issue</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Qt0xgOplFt4/UknhiBzCJzI/AAAAAAAAFWQ/A20iA06beqM/s1600/IMG_0822.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Qt0xgOplFt4/UknhiBzCJzI/AAAAAAAAFWQ/A20iA06beqM/s400/IMG_0822.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Going inside the darkened room, you are able to view the images of Seal Rocks and the surrounding area.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6lDy4sz9xu0/UkniVboATHI/AAAAAAAAFWY/Aw-q9dQnGAE/s1600/IMG_1571.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6lDy4sz9xu0/UkniVboATHI/AAAAAAAAFWY/Aw-q9dQnGAE/s400/IMG_1571.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
The building is located just behind the<a href="http://www.cliffhouse.com/home/index.html"> Cliff House</a> on Ocean Beach and is a little worn for wear now. There are no longer lines of people waiting to enter in this age of digital photography and cellphone cameras, but geeky art-minded people like me still wander in and are amazed with the simplicity and clarity of the images.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nqiSWA5FXCU/UknkJUQP34I/AAAAAAAAFWk/dkRGjZpQT7k/s1600/IMG_0823.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nqiSWA5FXCU/UknkJUQP34I/AAAAAAAAFWk/dkRGjZpQT7k/s400/IMG_0823.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The fact that these images are in "real time" with motion of the waves and birds flying, made this a popular tourist attraction in the 1960's.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W9a-enVpl4s/UknnWJEYmOI/AAAAAAAAFWw/eC5g-zZvrZw/s1600/longLAlogo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W9a-enVpl4s/UknnWJEYmOI/AAAAAAAAFWw/eC5g-zZvrZw/s320/longLAlogo.jpg" width="194" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Being the geek I am , I just purchased a <a href="http://www.camera-obscura-lucida-shop.com/lucid-art.php">camera lucida</a>, based on the early principle of the camera obscura. This will be used for transferring images for decorative painting. If your curiosity is peaked, but don't want to spend major bucks....<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TreGku802SE/Ujt55F7dMsI/AAAAAAAAFTk/dta3a-FksvY/s1600/1234636_10151684340003026_1898479280_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TreGku802SE/Ujt55F7dMsI/AAAAAAAAFTk/dta3a-FksvY/s400/1234636_10151684340003026_1898479280_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"> (Adrian Card photo)</span></div>
I just finished a wonderful class with <a href="http://adriancard.com/">Adrian Card</a> held at the studio of <a href="http://www.lynnerutter.com/">Lynne Rutter</a> in San Francisco. The panel was a strapwork design done in traditional colors with a fabulously rich black background.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-smy6aqK_tN8/Ujt6B7ITh5I/AAAAAAAAFT0/eEQ160UaNaM/s1600/1186083_10151697335178026_2046559802_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-smy6aqK_tN8/Ujt6B7ITh5I/AAAAAAAAFT0/eEQ160UaNaM/s640/1186083_10151697335178026_2046559802_n.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">(Lynne Rutter photo)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We started our day with a "training wheels" panel , practicing brushstrokes, highlights and shading. Adrian also demonstrated how to paint luminescent jewels.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DzZdGocUFmU/Ujt59anygeI/AAAAAAAAFTw/8KjmQh13014/s1600/1231410_10151693982168026_1179330524_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DzZdGocUFmU/Ujt59anygeI/AAAAAAAAFTw/8KjmQh13014/s640/1231410_10151693982168026_1179330524_n.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">(Lynne Rutter photo)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We traced our design and began to layer in base color, shadows and highlights, mimicking shiny brass for our strapwork framing. Everything was done in oil paint and with only one round brush...as it would have been in the 16th century.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ONJsT0baojk/Ujt9kQvPVYI/AAAAAAAAFUA/KWhQdUek-u8/s1600/photo-2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ONJsT0baojk/Ujt9kQvPVYI/AAAAAAAAFUA/KWhQdUek-u8/s640/photo-2.JPG" width="476" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can see from this detail of Adrian Card's panel, the design is rich with ornamentation,-draped swags, jewels, urns, birds and other elements adorn the strapwork framing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You may remember this panel that Adrian did a few years earlier that I included in an <a href="http://artstheanswer.blogspot.com/2010/09/strapwork.html">earlier post on strapwork.</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are my panels as class ended...I will finish them soon. Thanks go to Adrian Card for his teaching style and Lynne Rutter for the comfortable and creative environment of her studio!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e4q4D_dVcm4/UiT0eJL78HI/AAAAAAAAFRk/EgH7cs_XWkU/s1600/photo-3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e4q4D_dVcm4/UiT0eJL78HI/AAAAAAAAFRk/EgH7cs_XWkU/s640/photo-3.JPG" width="476" /></a></div>
I recently was asked to repair a room of <a href="http://www.zuber.fr/">Zuber</a> wallpaper that had water damage and pet damage...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LoklI6hZh_4/UiT1h7KN6NI/AAAAAAAAFR0/Xhw23IuH1WI/s1600/photo-18.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LoklI6hZh_4/UiT1h7KN6NI/AAAAAAAAFR0/Xhw23IuH1WI/s640/photo-18.JPG" width="478" /></a></div>
"Decor Chinois" was the pattern! First made in 1832, Decor Chinois has 57 colors in the design and came in three colorways-cream, pink and the popular green.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vDWzq1hiNJA/UiT7gPkkk-I/AAAAAAAAFSw/J3b5AxiflNU/s1600/00060076.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vDWzq1hiNJA/UiT7gPkkk-I/AAAAAAAAFSw/J3b5AxiflNU/s400/00060076.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I remember my first visit to the Zuber Paris showroom...I had set up an appointment and buzzed the door to be let in...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Njk6Lua5KuM/UiT8KB-lOhI/AAAAAAAAFS4/hLT6Tgu-G4c/s1600/00060096.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Njk6Lua5KuM/UiT8KB-lOhI/AAAAAAAAFS4/hLT6Tgu-G4c/s640/00060096.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
There were all of the designs on panels to flip through. Each design was hand carved from pear wood and made into wood blocks. They are kept in a controlled climate and allowed to rest for several years between printing again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YCv04zIEh2M/UiT2bBFFX3I/AAAAAAAAFR8/rm4xrWnECgY/s1600/photo-15.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YCv04zIEh2M/UiT2bBFFX3I/AAAAAAAAFR8/rm4xrWnECgY/s640/photo-15.JPG" width="478" /></a></div>
The previous owners had a dog that scratched a large area back to the liner.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g3pQRX0zawE/UiT25cvgO9I/AAAAAAAAFSE/wdYIVR2t3uY/s1600/photo-16.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g3pQRX0zawE/UiT25cvgO9I/AAAAAAAAFSE/wdYIVR2t3uY/s640/photo-16.JPG" width="478" /></a></div>
I repainted the design and moved on to the water damage...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qUtLbMgQ2_U/UiT3qrNPUdI/AAAAAAAAFSM/IGfezbMUjQU/s1600/photo-5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qUtLbMgQ2_U/UiT3qrNPUdI/AAAAAAAAFSM/IGfezbMUjQU/s640/photo-5.JPG" width="478" /></a></div>
Three walls had moderate to more extensive water damage from upstairs flooding...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H0n3p2rcxFc/UiT4ERtmh-I/AAAAAAAAFSY/NqIGPAQbplo/s1600/photo-17.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H0n3p2rcxFc/UiT4ERtmh-I/AAAAAAAAFSY/NqIGPAQbplo/s640/photo-17.JPG" width="482" /></a></div>
Several panels had multiple water stains running top to bottom through the designs. I painstakingly touched up each flower, bird and leaf in the effected area and then blended the background...ahem, did I mention Zuber is know for their gradation in color on their backgrounds? They start with one tone at the top and become lighter in the middle and then another shade at the bottom.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9-hABff5C4Q/UiT5kAmvv1I/AAAAAAAAFSk/cg4jHCQCbHE/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="614" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9-hABff5C4Q/UiT5kAmvv1I/AAAAAAAAFSk/cg4jHCQCbHE/s640/photo.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
Decor Chinois is no longer in production. The pear wood blocks begin to crack and warp after a century of use and must be retired. One of the perks of being a decorative artist is a job like this one....to come full circle from viewing the papers as a young artist and then restoring them to their original beauty, to be appreciated by another generation of art lovers!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SeQ9WIfjCD0/Uf7k3_Ru63I/AAAAAAAAFPQ/LkQRsMqVZ4o/s1600/IMG_1011.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SeQ9WIfjCD0/Uf7k3_Ru63I/AAAAAAAAFPQ/LkQRsMqVZ4o/s640/IMG_1011.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
If you have a sharp eye, you can still find these ornate door pulls in Italy. The pictures I am sharing are ones I have photographed from Venice.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B-fs4igz2xA/Uf7lnd-3jJI/AAAAAAAAFPY/qwdXoLJAKNk/s1600/IMG_0763.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B-fs4igz2xA/Uf7lnd-3jJI/AAAAAAAAFPY/qwdXoLJAKNk/s400/IMG_0763.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
There are still foundries in Venice that produce ornate decorative hardware from century old designs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EH7ccBdJm7Y/Uf7lt1yXXSI/AAAAAAAAFPg/yzpdcsVoYT4/s1600/IMG_0706.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EH7ccBdJm7Y/Uf7lt1yXXSI/AAAAAAAAFPg/yzpdcsVoYT4/s400/IMG_0706.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I love the blend of utilitarian and decorative function of these pulls.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qjWfBz0KEFE/Uf7pRYDYPhI/AAAAAAAAFQQ/y6E8hGfE758/s1600/IMG_4626.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qjWfBz0KEFE/Uf7pRYDYPhI/AAAAAAAAFQQ/y6E8hGfE758/s640/IMG_4626.JPG" width="425" /></a></div>
While visiting <a href="http://catoga.com/">Carlo Marchiori</a> in Calistoga, I purchased two door pulls, made in Venice, that Carlo was selling!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VVg5ROYd9Z8/Uf7n4nYH7wI/AAAAAAAAFPw/TLYtV8jLk0Y/s1600/photo-5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VVg5ROYd9Z8/Uf7n4nYH7wI/AAAAAAAAFPw/TLYtV8jLk0Y/s640/photo-5.JPG" width="379" /></a></div>
<br />
I wanted to mount them in my hallway. I bought thin plexiglass, mirrored it and antiqued it and added trim.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MMzkRb6JQwU/Uf7oFLS4XiI/AAAAAAAAFP4/hNqBjP5dCMY/s1600/photo-4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MMzkRb6JQwU/Uf7oFLS4XiI/AAAAAAAAFP4/hNqBjP5dCMY/s640/photo-4.JPG" width="444" /></a></div>
<br />
I then added the prized door pulls, one on each opposing door....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ao_reT2pQiI/Uf7oTDN3WYI/AAAAAAAAFQA/np2qiv_rjOM/s1600/photo-3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ao_reT2pQiI/Uf7oTDN3WYI/AAAAAAAAFQA/np2qiv_rjOM/s640/photo-3.JPG" width="476" /></a></div>
Now, I have to decide what to do with the space around the mirror...one thing at a time!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1AAAC1G6BFU/Uf7qDAV6gMI/AAAAAAAAFQc/jZN9czwltls/s1600/photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1AAAC1G6BFU/Uf7qDAV6gMI/AAAAAAAAFQc/jZN9czwltls/s640/photo.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
So, keep a sharp eye the next time you are in Venice and maybe you will see a door pull...made in Venice!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WgJteBmSSZs/UfWnhnH0B7I/AAAAAAAAFNY/0x7eQh2zYKM/s1600/cr_17recto.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WgJteBmSSZs/UfWnhnH0B7I/AAAAAAAAFNY/0x7eQh2zYKM/s400/cr_17recto.jpg" width="306" /></a></div>
I love<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strapwork"> strap work.</a>...and Montigny was one of the early decorative artists that did it so well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xV4siFk1Uo8/UfWqEYu8VUI/AAAAAAAAFNs/V5xbbzO2mvY/s1600/photo-14.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xV4siFk1Uo8/UfWqEYu8VUI/AAAAAAAAFNs/V5xbbzO2mvY/s400/photo-14.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Graham Arader has an impressive collection of Montigny watercolors in his two NYC galleries. I was in NYC recently and had contacted Mr. Arader prior to the visit to set up a time to see some of the work.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-veX5xYOU_00/UfWrX-HqzpI/AAAAAAAAFN4/DiX74s3pXwo/s1600/photo-5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-veX5xYOU_00/UfWrX-HqzpI/AAAAAAAAFN4/DiX74s3pXwo/s400/photo-5.JPG" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
The colors are still brilliant done in the late 1500's in watercolor on vellum. Graham has a detailed article on them <a href="http://grahamarader.blogspot.com/2011/10/natural-history-offering-of-day_21.html">on his blog</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-axGdPnViqNw/UfWscVh4hrI/AAAAAAAAFOE/8fRaIUbIybk/s1600/photo-7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-axGdPnViqNw/UfWscVh4hrI/AAAAAAAAFOE/8fRaIUbIybk/s400/photo-7.JPG" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
Montigny used decorative borders of floral motifs and strap woven strap work to frame the villages and pastoral scenes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OnqdWPyJ440/UfWtZjGWuJI/AAAAAAAAFOQ/qSZaCoQcPxI/s1600/photo-3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OnqdWPyJ440/UfWtZjGWuJI/AAAAAAAAFOQ/qSZaCoQcPxI/s400/photo-3.JPG" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
From his very detailed work, we can learn what trees grew in the area and even identify the buildings.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

"Assembled over four hundred years ago, the collection of watercolor albums commissioned by Duke Charles de Croy constitutes one of the most remarkable historical records of the towns and villages of the Low Countries of the 16th and 17th centuries, and a foremost artistic expression of the French Late-Renaissance style"<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">(</span><a href="http://grahamarader.blogspot.com/2011/10/natural-history-offering-of-day_21.html" style="font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">source)</a><br />

"Many show examples of highly distinctive strapwork decoration, a hallmark of the late European Mannerism. Strapwork was widely popular throughout the late 16th and early 17th centuries, a type of ornament generally employed for borders that was composed of bands with the appearance of having been cut from leather or sheet metal, then twisted and rolled into fantastic shapes. The origins of strapwork are to be found in Italian art at the beginning of the 16th century, and interlacing bandwork or strapwork appeared on bookbindings in Italy and Spain from the mid-15th century into the 16th. Early examples of bandwork used to articulate fields of ornament occur in Raphael's decoration of the Vatican Loggia(1518-19). Closer to de Montigny's center of activity, Rosso Fiorentino introduced a developed and highly individual form of strapwork in the stucco frieze of the Gallerie of Francois I at Fountainbleau."<a href="http://grahamarader.blogspot.com/2011/10/natural-history-offering-of-day_21.html" style="font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">(source)</a><br />
