Floorcloths

Gunderwood Studios photo

This is no aubusson rug....it is pure faux! Gunderwood studios are that good. This elaborate handpainted rug is the most incredible example of a floorcloth I have ever seen!

Gunderwood Studios
This is more of their work....amazing stuff!  I love the faux fringe on the edges.

Painted floorcloths have been around for centuries and still can add so much to an entry of a home.

Sophie Sarin also makes me smile with her mosaic floorcloth. How cool is it using the mosaic concept on a floorcloth? Sarin's work was recently featured by Daily Basics.

This gives you the scale of the whole design. Those red walls just make it pop!

Lucretia Moroni  photo  Fatto-a-Mano

Lucretia Moroni was one of the first artist to combine the look of hand woven oriental rugs into floorcloth designs. She combines silk screening with stenciling and hand painting on linen to create these incredible illusions.

Susie Morgan Wilburn took it one step further and painted a "floorcloth" for her table!  Floorcloths can add such a punch to a home for a small amount of money....get painting and let me know what you create!

Oh my, the first hand painted rug of Gunderwood Studios really is fabulous.

I read their bio...happy to know they have an Atlanta connection. Right here in my city!

I was thinking about this very thing earlier this week! About two years ago through my animal rescue efforts I met a woman who painted floorcloths and I loved her work. Now that I am remodeling my master bedroom, I wanted to contact her to see about purchasing one. Unfortunately, I cannot find her contact information. I love the “rugs” you have showcased here. Especially the round rug by Gunderwood Studios and the mosaic by Sophie Sarin. Just gorgeous!

Beautiful, I love the Aubusson rug. My question what are we looking at cost wise and if the colors aren't woven in what how long will it hold the colors?
There is no question this should sell like crazy. Her work is beautiful.

The mosaic is incredible closeup but simply spectacular when you see the full shot. All the floorcloth work and pics are just so beautiful. Thank you, Theresa - love this post!

Yvonne-
The colors will last for decades! They are sealed with shellacs and urethanes, Just like a painting, but more layers for foot traffic.I have one I made in the early 1980's and it is just like new. As far as price, you are paying for all that labor involved, but it is less than a woven rug of the same quality.

I love trompe l'oeil and had a ball perusing your links. I can already see a future kitchen project!

Theresa, love this posting..I am such a fan of well-done floorcloths. Lucretia takes the art to an entirely new height, too. They are all amazing, though. Thanks!

I have seen some beautiful floors painted, concrete, wood, but your images are fabulous.

Sophie Sarin's mosaic floorcloth is absolutely stunning...so perfect for the rest of the special features in this classic bathroom, the tub, the walls, the decorative painting, everything.

Theresa, I am just amazed!! I did a small one for my deck a few years back, would love to do one larger.

I would be interested in the weight of canvas used and the edge finishing. That was half the work of doing mine, and I thought there has to be an easier way?!

As soon as I saw the title for this post I just knew that you would have the mosaic rugs on here! I'm crazy for them...dying to walk on one barefoot...an added sensual pleasure, I'm sure. I love the puzzle aspect of mosaic...I would become obsessed. And millifiore, too. You just want to eat it up. Thanks...and congratulations on your stylish award...Mornings and cats rock!

A couple of days ago when I was stencilling a floor cloth for my new book my husband said. "I don't get it, who would want a floorcloth?"
"Me" I said and now thanks to you and the Daily Basics I have loads of fabulous images to defend myself with. Floorcloths are wonderful. I can't send you the picture destined for the book (til after it's published) but I made a sweet one last month. Shall I send you a photo?
PS. You so deserve a stylish blog award.

Helen-
YES! Your work is some of my favorite....just this morning I was trying to use the lace centerpiece stencils I bought at IDAL, but it wasn't the look needed for this job. Stay warm and keep painting those floorcloths!
